Last Night I watched Rosemary's Baby for the first time and I usually stick to Slasher films but sometimes I find different types of horror that I enjoy and this is one of them!
Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American psychological horror film directed by the very talented Roman Polanski its based on the book by Ira Levin who wrote Stepford Wives. It stars Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Ralph Belamy and Clara from Andy Griffith even has a bit role
Rosemary Woodhouse and her husband Guy move into an apartment that is rumored to have ties with the occult.
Rosemary meets her neighbor in the creepy downstairs basement laundry room
she says she is staying with the Castevet's who have apparently helped her and gotten her off of drugs.
The walls are extremely thin and Rosemary and her husband hear chanting next door
but its quickly dismissed and they make love on the floor of there empty apartment.
The next day or so Rosemary and her husband are taking a walk and come upon a large group of people and it turns out the neighbor has jumped out a window and committed suicide...Next Rosemary meets the neighbors the Castevet's who seem friendly enough but extremely tacky
soon the Castevet's are inviting them over for dinner and the accept to be nice ...after all they are old people who just lost a friend..you have to be nice to them..
They have dinner over and it seems like Guy who didn't want to go in the first place is really enjoying himself he surprises Rosemary by saying he is going back over there the next day.
Minnie Castevet gives Rosemary an odd smelling charm that she says contains Tannis root and later Guy lands a role in a play because the other guy has suddenly went blind.
Rosemary has been wanting a baby for sometime now and Guy suggests that this is now a good time for it..and Minnie Castevet brings over some sort of pudding which Rosemary says tastes awful she doesn't want to eat it but her husband pushes it on her she takes a few bites and then hides it in a napkin when he isn't looking..later she starts to feel faint and passes out
Rosemary then starts having a strange dream which mingles with reality
She sees naked old people The Castevets and there friends and suddenly she starts to get raped by Satan.
The next morning when she wakes up she is covered in scratch marks and her husband says that they had sex.
Rosemary learns that she is pregnant and due June 28 she plans on going to Dr Hill but the Castevet's and her husband push a different doctor on her
So she goes to that doctor who tells her he wants to take a herb drink from Minnie every day
Rosemary soon starts losing weight and looking sick her doctor keeps telling her she well feel better soon and not to worry.
Her old friend Hutch comes to visit her and sees how sick she is and learns about the Tannis root she is taking and becomes concerned..Roman Castevet Drops in and it is clear he sees Hutch as an enemy
When Hutch goes to leave he finds that one of his gloves is missing.
Later he calls Rosemary to meet to talk but he never shows up and she finds out that he slipped into a coma
Three months later, Hutch dies. He leaves Rosemary a book about witchcraft and it is delivered to her at his funeral along with the cryptic message: "The name is an anagram". Rosemary deduces that Roman Castevet is really Steven Marcato, the son of a former resident of the Bramford who was accused of being a Satanist. Rosemary suspects her neighbors and Dr. Sapirstein are part of a cult with sinister designs for her baby, and that Guy is cooperating with them in exchange for help in advancing his career.
Rosemary becomes increasingly disturbed and shares her fears and suspicions with Dr. Hill, who, assuming she is delusional, calls Dr. Sapirstein and Guy. They tell her that if she co-operates, neither she nor the baby will be harmed. The two men bring Rosemary home, where she briefly escapes them. Despite Rosemary locking them out, they enter the bedroom. Rosemary goes into labor and is sedated by Dr. Sapirstein. When she wakes, she is told the baby died.
In the hall closet, Rosemary discovers a secret door leading into the Castevet apartment and hears a baby's cries revealing that her child is alive, she then finds a congregation gathered around her newborn son. After seeing the disturbing appearance of her baby's eyes, Rosemary is told that Guy is not the baby's father and that the baby, named Adrian, is actually the spawn of Satan. This horrifies Rosemary, who spits in Guy's face. Roman urges Rosemary to become a mother to her son and assures her that she does not have to join the cult if she doesn't want to. She adjusts her son's blankets and gently rocks his cradle with a small smile on her face.
I would have to say that the husband in this movie is the most evil character ever!
